Will we really be able to fly between Dubai and New York in 22 minutes?
If only we could stop wasting hours and hoursĀ on long flights and put that time to better use…right? Well, that might just be an option if industrial designer Charles Bombardier (yep, that’s his real name) gets his way. It’ll be a little while before it’s available and we imagine it’ll cost you a fair bit too but we’re excited all the same.
‘The Antipode’ will be a luxury businessĀ jet capable of reaching Mach 24 āĀ 12 times faster than Concorde ā it’sĀ designedĀ to carryĀ a maximum of 10 peopleĀ up to 20,000km/12,427milesĀ in under anĀ hour.Ā
The plan is that the aircraft will have rocket boosters attached to theĀ wings so it willĀ be capable of taking off from any airfield.Ā The accelerators would provide the craftĀ with enough thrust to climb to 40,000 feet and reach Mach 5, then separate from itĀ and flyĀ back to base.
Bombardier explains:Ā ‘The aircraftās onboard computer would then ignite its supersonic combustion ramjet engine and accelerate up to Mach 24.Ā
āI wanted to create an aircraft concept capable of reaching its antipodeāor diametrical oppositeāas fast as possible.ā
It sounds pretty complicated to us and we might be waiting quite a while until the Antipode hits the skies, and even longer before we can afford to be sat in one of the precious 10 seats on board. But we can dream…
