Avatar

Is there anyone who doesn’t love a good plate of fish and chips? Don’t lie…of course not! That soft flakey white fish surrounded by crispy batter…with a side of the world’s best carbs and mushy peas too. Got your mouth watering? Here’s the top ten places to whet your appetite…

10. Ocean Basket

This brand from South Africa is a secret gem when it comes to seafood and sushi. Located in City Centre Mirdif and terminal 3 of Dubai airport, it’s family friendly and kind on the wallet too. Ocean Basket covers every sort of seafood you could ask for and also does a mean sticky toffee pudding. We’re extremely fond of the fish and chips too, choose between the hake ‘Famous Feesh & Chips’ for AED 45 (pictured below) or the sustainable option of pangasius ‘OB Feesh & Chips’ for AED 35.

9. The Scene

Not only the perfect place to sit and drink a cocktail while staring out at the stunning Marina views, this place at Pier 7, also does a mean fish and chips. It’s all about taste and portion size here…if you’re hungry and a dainty dish won’t do – head to The Scene. The batter is crazy crispy and in utter contrast to the soft fish that falls apart at the touch of a fork. Special shout out to the mushy peas which are pretty much intact rather than mushed – just how we like them!

8. Ghaf Kitchen

Ok, so this one is a bit of a wild card.Ghaf is not technically a place, it’s a pop up (read: food van) that’s on the move around Al Quoz (location changes). And it’s not exactly fish and chips but more of a fish finger sandwich with mushy peas stuffed in and chips on the side. But it’s so tasty and so filling and only AED 49…that we couldn’t leave it off the list.

7. McGettigan’s

It might be known as the place for watching Irish people get drunk or English people play very average football, but McGettigan’s actually do very decent food. Favourites include a mean Irish breakfast, a damn good roast and a pretty much perfect fish and chips. A huge portion of crispy beer battered fish and even crispier chunky chips, served with mushy peas and tartar sauce for AED 80.

6. Firebird Diner

If a posh fish and chips with a twist is your thing, then this option at Firebird Diner at the new Four Seasons in DIFC will have your mouth watering. The traditional battered fish is swapped in for their ‘Chips on Fish’ option. Think: potato-crusted dover sole, radish, lemon, green beans and tartar sauce, it’s not cheap at AED 175…but it’s bloody delicious!

5. Reform, Social & Grill

There’s no better place to have a beer garden afternoon (when the weather permits) than Reform, but when it’s just that little bit too hot, worry not – head indoors and tuck into the rather generous and damn delicious fish and chips from the ‘Catch of the Day’ section of the menu. The dish which costs AED 110, is served with minted mushy peas and tartar sauce.

4. Senara

If you haven’t popped down to Senara restaurant at West Palm Views, on the Palm Jumeirah yet…this is your push to do it! Not only do they serve excellent fish and chips at the waterfront bistro, you need to try the buckets of mussels and oysters, oh and the mouth-watering lobster linguini. The fish and chips, one of the signature dishes by British Head Chef Anthony, is served with delicious chunky chips and the creamiest mushy peas – yum! Expect to pay AED 90 but it’s worth every dirham.

3. JB’s

When we talk about fish and chips – most people are more bothered about what’s in the batter than the side of the potatoes that comes with it. At JB’s (Amwaj Rotana, JBR), both are equally  important. The delicious crisp beer-battered cod comes with mushy peas and hand-cut chips, which are made from the crimson-coloured Désirée potato (the world’s most popular potato, you know) – to give your side order that extra buttery but smooth, fluffy and crispy taste. The dish is more than worth the AED 89 you’ll pay for it.

2. Bread Street Kitchen

We don’t need an excuse to pop to Atlantis The Palm and definitely not to go and eat at Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen…but if you do need an excuse – the traditional fish and chips is just the ticket. It comes with a side of minted pea puree, crispy chips and chip shop sauce…the taste and atmospheric setting is worth the 120 AED price tag.

1. Bob’s Fish and Chips

Whatever your thoughts on Bob’s, be that it’s ‘end of the night’ fodder or ‘day after’ carbs…there’s no doubting that everything tastes mighty fine…trust us we’ve even eaten pretty much everything on the menu without a drop of booze in our bodies.

And we love the fish and chips options so much – it’s surprisingly stolen our number one slot! Why exactly? Because, at the end of the day, we want our fish and chips as close to the ones your typical chippy serves. We don’t mind that touch of grease, those ridiculously-soft-almost-soggy chips…because the whole thing is delicious, and best of all delivered to your door at pretty much any hour!

The ‘traditional fish and chips’ offering has a large selection of fish to choose from, including cod, hake, hammour and haddock, expect to pay AED 68. Need more carbs? Opt for the fish burger and chips for AED 50. Watching the pennies? Go for the kids meal version of the burger and chips for just AED 30…it’s still pretty generous!
