From The Slums Of Dhaka To The Dubai City Life: The Inspiring Success Story Of Majeda Khatun

Avatar

21 year old Majeda Khatun was born in the slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh. She and all the other children living there did not know their age or have birth certificates.

She was one among her 4 sisters and had always been seen as a burden to her parents because not only was she a girl but she was dark skinned too. She says that she was much darker compared to her sisters and it would have been a hassle for her parents to find a husband for her.

In many parts of the world being a girl is considered to be a curse and a huge burden to the family.

Majeda’s father was a shopkeeper and her mother worked in a garment factory. Despite working for long hours, they still couldn’t make ends meet.

In 2005, Maria a Portuguese woman who was working for cabin crew at the time appeared as an angel in disguise in Majeda’s life. Maria was visiting Dhaka from a stopover flight and was shocked to see the level of poverty the people were facing. She later made it her mission to change the lives of people living there and get them out of the severe poverty.

She ran marathons around the world and even climbed the Mount Everest to raise awareness and funds for the people of Dhaka.

Thanks to Maria, Majeda had the opportunity to go to school and her parents even started to understand the benefits of a good education as well as how it benefits them in the long term. Majeda was the first person in her family to get an education up to grade 12 as well as the first one to go abroad too. She did internships and studied Informatics Engineering in Europe.

She’s currently living with Maria in the UAE for the past 10 months, doing internships in various organizations.

Her goal is to help 700 students from slums all around the world.
