A UAE Billionaire Is Footing The Bill For India’s Most Expensive Film Ever

A UAE-based businessman is funding India’s most expensive film, it has been announced.

UAE-based Indian businessman, Bavaguthu Raghuram Shetty (known as Dr. B R Shetty) the founder and chairman of Abu Dhabi-based NMC group is investing Rs 1,000 crore (USD 150 Million) to produce India’s biggest-ever motion picture, The Mahabharata, which will be helmed by filmmaker Shrikumar Menon.

Touted as the creme de la creme of Indian cinema, the project will have top-notch technicians and artists from world cinema.

According to reports, the film will be made in two parts and is all set to kick off in September 2018. The first part of Mahabharata will hit the screens in 2020, while the second part will release 90 days after the first part. 

“The film will be shot primarily in English, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu and will be dubbed into major Indian languages and leading foreign languages. I am confident that this film will be adapted in over 100 languages and reach over three billion people across the world.”

South Indian megastar Mohanlal will be playing Bheema in the film. An elated Mohanlal took to Facebook to share his thoughts on the film.

The film is an adaptation of Randamoozham, written by MT Vasudevan Nair, which tells the story through the eyes of Bheema, the second of the Pandavas

The screenplay is written by the Nair, who holds a record of maximum National Awards for screenwriting in the history of Indian cinema according to reports. 

The ancient Sanskrit epic of Mahabharata has been a topic of creative adaption in different formats for many decades. The project will be the first of its kind to take the epic which has been engaged generations of audiences on the silver screen at such a grand level.
