A Sensor Based Signal For Safe Crossing Is Being Trialled In Dubai
Yesterday, The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) tested out the use of a “smart pedestrian light signal” as a new initiative. This would allow for ensuring that the people crossing the roads would be safe and that it could determine when no pedestrians are around, allowing extra time for vehicles to pass.
Here are photos from Dubai Media Office’s official Twitter account displaying the trial stages

This is how it works
As old by Dubai Media Office, the sensors installed by the signals through an ‘optical ground system’ will work in sync with the traffic lights. It can then detect if pedestrians are on the pavement (prior to crossing the street or even during) and it works to modify the light’s signal in accordance to that.
