There Has Been A Big Call From Doctors And Mums For A Change In Abortion Law

Both doctors and mothers in the UAE have called for a change in the law surrounding abortion in the UAE. Currently, if the life of the mother is at risk or in the case of fatal foetal abnormalities, a woman can undergo an abortion provided the foetus is no older than 120 days.

However, according to UAE doctors, many fatal foetal abnormalities can only be detected in the later stages of pregnancy. This is why they are requesting that the law should be changed so that abortions can be carried out at any stage during a pregnancy, should the life of the mother or the baby be at risk.

According to Dr. Sameh Azzazy, an obstetrician and gynaecologist at Welcare Hospital in Dubai, there should be no cut off date for terminating a pregnancy under these circumstances. Each situation should have the opportunity to be to be referred to a committee that can include a religious scholar and looked at on a case-by-case basis.
