A British woman and Pakistani man have been jailed following consensual sex in Dubai. Having sex outside of marriage is illegal in the UAE and the pair were not married at the time of the incident.

The British woman is appealing the one year jail sentence handed down to them by a Dubai court.

The woman travelled to Dubai to meet the Pakistani man in 2016

The pair reportedly met on Facebook over three years ago and began contact.

She then travelled to Dubai and stayed in a hotel with him for a week when the consensual sex took place.

The man claims the two were verbally married by a Pakistani religious scholar.

The woman denies these marriage claims.

According to reports the woman was due to marry a different man in London and when the Pakistani man learned of this he threatened to shame her, reveal their marriage to her family and publish photos of them together.

She also claims that he threatened to kill her if she married someone else.

The woman and her father travelled to Dubai to lodge a complaint against the man

Following the complaint the man was arrested and then made a counter complaint against the woman citing that she had contacted him and asked him not to divorce her.

In the course of their investigation authorities then uncovered that the couple had had sex while unmarried.

The Dubai Misdemeanours Court found the couple guilty and sentenced them to a year of jail time followed by deportation.

Both individuals have pleaded not guilty and have sought an appeal before the Appeal Court.
