According to a report in Al Ittihad over 80% if lost items turned over to the Dubai Police are never claimed by the owners.

Even though many of the items are valuable, the owners seem to either forget about them or must think they are lost forever.

The bag of money contains Venezuelan currency worth AED170,000

And it’s not the only valuable item that lies unclaimed with the Dubai Police.

Lost items that have yet to be reunited with their owners include electronics, important documents such as passports and bags of cash.

All these items stay in the possession of the police until the owner comes forward to claim them or is located by the police to return the items.

Most items are never returned to their rightful owners

In the report Colonel Rashid Bin Safwan, head of Dubai Police’s Lost and Found department stated that over 9,000 items were recovered by Dubai police last year.

Any official documents or currency were turned over to the relevant authorities.

After that any remaining unclaimed items were publicly auctioned.

According to Bin Safwan, the owner has up to 15 years to claim a lost item and in the event that the item has been auctioned they have the right to a cash equivalent of the value of the item.
