As Dubai moves forwards in becoming a more environmentally friendly nation, a new technological advancement hasn’t made the cut. One-time use mobile chargers have been deemed an environmental risk. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director-General of Dubai Municipality issued the decree based on the charger’s failure to comply with the local technical requirements as well as public health and safety requirements.

The Director of the Health and Safety Department, Redha Salman said that the decree followed an agreement that the chargers were dangerous to the environment. “They are also increasing the quantity of electronic waste included in general waste, which constitutes an environmental burden. As well as the environmental damage, these chargers also cause financial loss to the public due to their short life,” added Salman.

“The municipality calls upon all establishments operating in the emirate not to import or sell any disposable and non-rechargeable one-time use mobile phone chargers and return them to the country of origin or re-export within one month from the date of issuance of the circular as they carry environmental risks, and we have to work for environmental protection and public health and safety,” he said.
