Shisha cafes have been one of this city’s favourite pastimes post-work, during lunch breaks or dinners. So if you are one of the residents with a favorite shisha hotspot in Dubai, you may want to check in again on the place soon.

Dubai Municipality is closing 119 cafes due to their violation of the specific laws. Here are the 4 main reasons why some licenses won’t be renewed and will see a foreclosure.

1. The lack of space in shisha cafes

The director of occupational health and safety department, Redha Salman, stated that the lack of space in the cafés were one of the main issues and any spot facing this issue will be given six months to solve it, otherwise it will be closed.

2. Area requirements in shisha cafes

Salman added that it is also not allowed to offer shishas in cafes in proximity to places of worship, academic institutions, nightclubs and residences, and hospitals in accordance to the Federal Law No. (15) of 2009 on Tobacco Control. So any cafe that does not comply with the area regulations could be inspected and closed.

3. Having anyone under 18 years old in cafes is also prohibited

As it has been for years, if anyone under the required age is seen in these establishments, it could also foresee action taken place by the authorities.

4. Violation of items in the permits

“The owners of eligible establishments and cafés were directed to submit e-applications through the Public Health and Safety Department page of Dubai Municipality website to obtain a permit by submitting the required documents using the self-service for getting permit for designated smoking areas,” said Salman.
