A Major Emirates Route Is Facing Redirects Due To A Damaged Pipeline

Due to a leak in a main channel of jet fuel in Auckland, Emirates’ longest flight has officially had to include a stop-over, adding an additional two hours to the 16 hour flight.

The current situation – that is not expected to be permanent – is that the main pipeline between New Zealand’s only oil refinery and Auckland’s airport is dealing with a leak that has resulted airlines into having to reduce their fuel consumption to 30% less as authorities work on the damage.

As a result of the implementation of the new rules, many flights have had to be cancelled, ticket sales have become restricted, and some even stopped.

Emirates attempts to work around the current situation

Emirate’s EK449 flight from Dubai to Auckland, previously known as the world’s longest non-stop flight, had to re-adjust details of their journey and add Christchurch as a stop-over for refuelling over the weekend.

Continuing the daily service to Auckland, Emirates will now include a stopover in Melbourne for refuelling, which will add an additional two hours to the flight, but passengers will not have to disembark the plane.

Connecting flights will be rebooked

A spokesman for Emirates released a statement saying, “Customers holding tickets with onward connections during this time are advised to contact their local Emirates office and check the status of their flight. Connecting flights will be rebooked as required.”

Repairs are still undergoing

New Zealand airlines have advised the public that they do not know how long repairs will take to fix the damaged 168 kilometre pipeline, but that they are doing everything they can to deal with the current challenge throughout the week.
