5 Things You Need To Know About Expo 2020 And Why It’s SO EXCITING

As the Expo 2020 looms (just three years now people!), Dubai has become a hive of activity in preparation.

The landmark event will see millions of visitors come to the UAE between October 20, 2020 and April 10, 2021.

World Expos are designed to share ideas, showcase innovation, and encourage collaboration.

Dubai’s theme for Expo 2020 is ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ – so ideas will centre around this.

Here are a few things you should know about it.

1. There’s a massive event happening at JBR The Beach to celebrate it

Today (Friday) at 4.30pm, down at JBR’s The Beach, there’s a very special event happening to showcase some of what to expect for 2020.

The Expo 2020 will kick off on October 20, 2020, and this three-year mark will show residents what to expect, and celebrate the lead-up to this very exciting event.

There will be live entertainment, giveaways, a presentation and a 6m high zipline to ride!

2. The first World Expo was held in 1851

Hosted at Crystal Palace in London, the first World Expo was created to showcase the inventions from the Industrial Evolution.

Four years later, the World Expo was hosted in Paris, and introduced innovations including the lawn mower, Singer’s sewing machine and the Moore’s washing machine to the world.

3. Expo 2020 will be the first World Expo to take place in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia

With Dubai less than an eight-hour flight from two thirds of the world population, the geographical location of Dubai made it an appealing choice for 2020.

It’s expected this World Expo will have a significant impact on the region and its surrounds as it’s the first access for many countries.

4. Notable innovations introduced globally from Expo have become staples of modern life

From the lawn mower in the second World Expo, to the telephone in 1876, even Heinz ketchup was unveiled to the world in a World Expo.

The Eiffel Tower was the main symbol of the 1889 Expo in Paris – though was not universally popular initially!

In 1904, automobiles, wireless technology and aeronautics were exhibited.

The most recent World Expo was in Milan, Italy…

5. The UAE is building a small city to host the Expo 2020

District 2020 is going to be the hub and home of the World Expo – in Dubai South.

It will host 65,000sqm of residential space, 135,000sqm of commercial space, and will be home to innovation, education, cultural and entertainment facilities.

District 2020 will be home to Al Wasl Plaza – the sustainability pavilion, and the falcon-shaped UAE pavilion.

It’s all currently under construction but is coming along very well.
