These Emirati Sisters Are Taking The International Go Karting Circuit By Storm

They’re just 16 and 14 but Amna and Hamda Al Qubaisi, students of Sheikh Zayed Private Academy in Abu Dhabi, are making a name for themselves on the international karting circuit.

(Rethinking your life decisions at this point is totally understandable).

Amna is the first female Emirati driver to represent the UAE at an international event. She competed at the Rotax Max Challenge grand finals in Portugal last year. Hamda has been selected by the FIA as an ambassador for the Women in Motorsport Commission.

Racing is in their blood…

Their father, Khaled Al Qubaisi, is a professional racing driver. He was part of the first Emirati team to claim third place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (the world’s oldest active sports car race in endurance racing). He started to train Amna since she was three years old and told her if she really wanted to do it, he would support her. Hamda became interested in racing while watching her older sister race. Their mum lends them an equal amount of support by accompanying them to international events.

Next up…

Hamda will compete in the third round of the Commission ­Internationale de Karting-FIA in Sweden. After the first two rounds in France and Portugal, she was placed 27 out of 51 and is pretty confident that she can reach the top 10.

Amna will progress to Formula 4 next year. It is an open wheel category for young drivers. The UAE will launch the first Formula 4 championship in the Middle East and North Africa later this year.

They’re making a point…

“We are spreading the word that women can do everything. We can do anything, even if it’s a men’s sport. We can show them that we are capable of doing what men can do,” Amna told The National.
