A job application for a Dubai opticians with a questionably worded summary has drawn negative criticism online.

Yateem Opticians is a popular Middle East eyewear retailer with over 80 showrooms across the region.

They tweeted a post outlining an available retail position and some key points caught the attention of Dubai’s Twitterati…

The retail position post stated ‘candidates who don’t meet the below-mentioned profile requirements will be blacklisted from all future recruitments within our group’

Yateem provided its rational for the posting

“Whenever we have a vacancy and an advertisement is placed, we specify the minimum required skills or experience. This maybe the language skills or work experience or academic qualification. Beyond this, one of the core ethos we look for in candidates is diligence in reading the job description fully and self-determining whether they meet the criteria mentioned. Sadly, most of the applications we receive are from candidates who don’t meet the criteria we specify. Yateem Opticians is a highly inclusive company and we always welcome applicants from all background to send in their CV to our HR for storage in our database for future use.”

Applicants are still not meeting criteria

“But in a job announcement with specific criteria, we expect candidates to apply if they are confident they meet the skills listed. To this effect, we had created the job post which specified that we will be blacklisting candidates who apply in a separate channel if they don’t meet the requirements listed in the job description. While this might seem harsh, we are sad to report that even on this case we have received more than 300 applications from candidates who don’t meet the skills required. Further on, the job post mentions that candidates will have to use a specific application number when applying.

This was also not done by a vast majority of the applicants, calling into question whether the candidates have truly taken the time to read the job post. We have to screen each and every CV we receive with due diligence to provide all candidates a fair chance at the position irrespective of other factors. This post has allowed us to screen the applicants more effectively and identify those who don’t meet this criteria. We respect the views of our customers and have taken down this post.”
