Robocops Are Coming To The Streets Of Dubai

Serve the public trust, protect the innocent and uphold the law, that’s the prime directives of Dubai’s new Robocop. And he could be coming to a community near you as soon as next year. The robot is trained to scan and recognise faces and, if you happen to be a stranger, will enquire as to what you are doing in the area. Dubai Police teamed up with tech giant Huawei to develop ‘MEO,’ the robotic security guard.

Bo Zheng, a Partner and Chief Robotic Scientist at ijourney explained how MEO operates, “If you’re a stranger to the area, our facial recognition can stop you and politely ask you what you are doing here. MEO has a rotation camera that will send a video to the control room [who can] see who you are. If something happens you can actually press the red button and you can talk directly to the guy in the security office and tell him what’s going on. Meanwhile, a rotation camera will send video back to the control room so officers will see what’s going on, continuously.”

Meo is currently on display at GITEX Technology Week. “Excuse me, I have to go. Somewhere there is a crime happening.”
