100 Days To Plastic Free: One Homegrown Dubai Restaurant Group’s Journey To Sustainability
This weekend saw some of the biggest climate change protests aiming to incite world leaders to take action immediately to tackle climate change.
With a worldwide turnout estimated at 4 million across thousands of cities, from New York and Berlin to Rio and Manila, made up predominately of younger generations, the message is clear:
People are ready to taken action.
Tom Arnel is the Dubai-based Aussie restauranteur, the creator of the Bull & Roo group which has many well-known creative food concepts under its belt including Tom & Serg, Common Grounds and The Sum of Us and he has pledged the group to move towards becoming single use plastic free in the coming months.

Going plastic-free for an operation this size is no easy task
Tom notes that we all have a responsibility to minimise the negative impact our actions have on the environment. There are many ways to do this and cutting the use of single use plastics, which have an adverse effect on the environment, is one important step towards sustainability.
The mission will require looking at everything from packaging to logistics and learning from the experts how to achieve best practice. The company aim to be single use plastic-free by January 1, 2020.
Though we didn’t see protests here in Dubai, stories like these are the sharp reminder to the rest of us. What changes could you make to reduce the amount of plastic in our life?
Going plastic-free is not the cheapest option
Many restaurants stock plastic cups, cutlery and straws. They use plastic wrap, plastic is the go-to for storage containers, coffee lids, drink stirrers… the list is endless.
Storage, purchases, setup and everything will need to be reevaluated as part of the process.
