Emirates Airlines Might Just Have To Pay MILLIONS In Compensation To Passengers

Passenger rights have just got a major boost in the European Union.

The supreme court in the EU has voted for a new ruling where travellers are now entitled for compensation for flight delays, even if the compensation was previously denied by the airline. 

As a result thousands of travellers are now in the line for compensation of EUR600 (or AED2710) from Emirates for flight delays.

What does this mean?

This means that if your flight from anywhere in the EU was delayed for  three hours or more from the scheduled landing time at your final destination, you’d be entitled for a compensation. This new ruling is known as EC261

This also applies to all the travellers whose outbound flight from the UK arrives in Dubai less than three hours late, but enough that they missed their onward connection.

NOTE- This only includes circumstances which were under airline’s controls. 

The long-standing battle between Emirates and the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)

Emirates had previously challenged EU rules for delay compensation. In 2017, the Appeal Court had rejected Emirates’ plea on the case. They’ve now lost that case against CAA in the Supreme Court.  

Emirates, along with four other airlines, will be legally forced to pay compensation to all the passengers they previously denied paying to. 

Passengers have up to six years to make their claims.

An Emirates spokesperson told Independent, “As one of the world’s largest airlines, we always comply with all legal requirements and based on the judgement, we’ll advise customers of our approach in due course.”
