Picking my favourite hotel in Dubai is like trying to choose my favourite chocolate bar. There are just so many amazing options, it’s nearly impossible to pick. But, gun to my head, if I HAD to choose one, it would be the new St Regis.
Despite it’s location right next to the busy Sheikh Zayed road, the hotel has made a huge impression since it opened it’s doors last year (2016). We went to try out the afternoon tea at the Sidra lounge, here are six reasons why you should try it too:
1. The hotel itself is worth seeing
The driveway and the surrounding walkways are one thing, but the front hall with its grand sweeping marble staircase with gold gilding, huge marble pillars and magnificent chandeliers are something else. Even the bathrooms here are worthy of your time!
2. The food is what you would expect
The general afternoon tea setup: you’re presented with a stack of sweet and savory treats. We had the festive menu and our stack was made up with about 15 different two-mouthful samplers, including a prawn cocktail, brie and cranberry tartlet and chocolate eclairs. As a whole the presentation was lovely, however there was no stand out favourite. They were all good, but nothing really amazing.
At the end a bowl of warm fresh scones, cream and jam were brought to the table. Easy to make, but hard to perfect, these scones were a nice touch at the end, and were easily our favourite part of the lot.
3. You will listen to beautiful live music
4. You can sit here all afternoon
And we did exactly that. The staff made us feel comfortable and we rested and enjoyed the ambiance of the hotel for the afternoon.
Every day at 7pm at every St Regis around the world a champagne ‘sabering’ takes place. We were lazy enough to still be sitting there at this time (afternoon tea ends at 6) so we caught it. A bottle of champagne is cut by a single-edge sword. It was an exciting end to our afternoon, and the glass of bubbles they passed around to the little group of spectators was an extra treat too!
5. It’s all about the tea
There were over twenty options to choose from. We chose a green tea called Bali; it was a light option to compliment all the cakes we would eventually stuff our faces with!
6. You can have your experience with bubbles if you’d like
No afternoon tea is really complete with a celebratory glass of bubbles..not celebrating anything? Celebrate life! (Or any excuse you can think of really…)
