40,000 Cars Are Being Recalled In The UAE As Part Of A Global Recall

Nearly 40,000 Toyota vehicles are being recalled in the UAE due to faulty airbags.

More than 2.9 million cars are being recalled globally, in what could be the largest recall in automotive history.

16 deaths have been linked to the faulty airbags in the US.

The airbags-inflator, manufactured by Japanese company Takata, use a propellant which may degrade over time and when exposed to fluctuating temperatures and environmental moisture.

This degradation may lead to excess internal pressure when the airbag deploys and cause the inflator to explode. This can then cause metal fragments to pass through the airbag cushion to the passenger causing injury or death as reported in some cases.

Distributors in the UAE have starting recalling the vehicles

Al Futtaim Motors said in a statement “We have started a special service campaign on additional 39,294 vehicles in the UAE, including Corolla MY 2010 to 2013, Yaris MY 2012 and Alphard MY 2011 and 2013.”

This is following a global recall earlier in the year.

Takta has already paid a USD$1 billion settlement which included compensation for victims and distributors.
