6 Things That Elon Musk Said In Dubai Last Week About The Future Of This City

Elon Musk was in Dubai last week to speak at the World Government Summit and to launch his car company, Tesla, in the UAE. He spoke for 45 minutes at the conference, and for five minutes at the Armani Hotel event on Wednesday night. Here are six things we learnt about the future of Dubai while he was here:

1. “10 years from now… getting in a car will be like getting in an elevator. You get in and you tell it where to go.”

In Dubai, it is coming sooner than 10 years. Here is a clip of the launch of Tesla in the UAE.

2. “I don’t have a Mars death wish, but we’re all going to die one day. If given the choice, why not die on Mars? But if I do die on Mars I don’t want it to be on impact.”

This was right before HH Sheikh Mohammed announced his plans for a settlement on Mars

3. “The deepest mines are deeper than the tallest buildings. Tunnels could be multilayer, 50 stories deep. The challenge is learning how to build tunnels quickly at low cost, with high safety.”

As Dubai gets more congested, we may need to dig deeper.

4. “Pay close attention to the development of artificial intelligence. Be careful that scientists don’t get carried away. They can get so engrossed that they don’t realise the ramifications.”

5. “Mass unemployment is going to be a massive challenge. We’re going to need a universal basic income. There will be fewer and fewer jobs that a robot cannot do better.

Less jobs in Dubai, then less people.

6.  “If aircrafts were sole use and cost millions of dollars per ticket, nobody would fly. If rockets were reusable the cost would come down and more people would use them.”

This one is a piece of advice what Emirates should be building next.
