Avatar

Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre has announced that the search for the UAE’s first man – or woman – in space could begin as early as the end of this year.

The government will start seeking applications officially latest by early 2018, according to The National. And, while it has not been specified, it is likely that UAE nationals will be given priority and you will need a STEM degree and a couple of years of experience on you.

You need a degree in STEMEither way, here is the ‘minimum criteria’:

Perseverance

It might seem obvious but determination is the most important trait in becoming an astronaut!

There are people who have been turned down FIVE times before finally being accepted by NASA.

But, so long as you are dedicated to your goal – you are good to go.

Good people skills

Nobody wants to be trapped in a small capsule for weeks with someone who isn’t pleasant to be around!

Nasa has further divided the basic requirements for new astronauts into three areas

A degree in STEM

So you can carry out research and experiments when you are in the International Space Station.

And you have to be physically fit

While you may have to cut down on those midnight pizza deliveries, this requirement isn’t quite as tough as you’d expect it to be.

Age isn’t even that much of a barrier – the youngest astronaut yet was 25 and when he went on orbit and the oldest to return to space was 77.

And ANYONE with normal weight and fitness can safely go into low Earth orbit with the right training (which typically take a minimum of two years before a mission).

And, of course, once you are in orbit, you are going to have to keep up with a good exercise regime to not mess up your muscle and bone density

Don’t worry – there is a gym in space

The International Space Station has specially designed exercise machines including weights and treadmills for the astronauts on boards you will typically have to spend AT LEAST two hours a day exercising while in orbit.

Some astronauts have even completed MARATHONS while orbiting the Earth!

So, do you have what it takes?

Think of the Instagram opportunities.
