An Expat In Dubai Is Being Held On Trial For Social Media Posts Insulting Islam

A man, who insulted IslamĀ on social media who then reportedly tried to flee the country, is now in trial. On November 6, 2016, a 31-year-old Indian expat was held responsible for “posting messages- insulting Islam and disrespecting Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) on Facebook,” according to Khaleej Times.

His messages were still attained by Dubai’s public prosecution even after deleting the posts

Although the electric welder deleted his offensive posts from his account, the copies were still attained by the prosecution, translated and used as proof. The charge was filed on November 7th at Al Rashidiya’s police station.Ā 

He then tried to flee the country

Wherein he was arrested after two days at the Dubai International Airport whilst trying to leave the city. Reports claim that the phone he used to post the messages was taken by the authorities and the man has now been charged with disrespecting the Prophet(PBUH) online.Ā 

The General Directorate of Criminal Evidence told Khaleej Times that the man’s Facebook account had been accessed from his own mobile phone and although investigations prove he last logged out on November 7, hacking was not suspected.

The trial is postponed to March 21. Ā
