A Top Arab Influencer Has Sparked A Huge Debate Online For Her Shocking Views On Domestic Workers

A video of a Kuwaiti social media influencer has sparked outrage for her rant about the laws and policies relating to domestic workers.

The Kuwaiti make up artist and online personality, Sondos AlQattan has 2.3 million Instagram followers and was rated number nine on Forbes Middle East top nine Arab personalities to follow.

AlQattan shared her opinion about the recent reforms in Kuwaiti laws which state all domestic workers must have at least one day off a week and that they must keep their passports with them.

The influencer posted a video in which she disagreed with the reforms

She worries she will lose money if the domestic workers leave

She says she came across the news laws which include a break every five hours, a day off a week, and how domestic workers must have their passport on them.

She said that she is shocked at the passport law because “if they run away and went back to their country”, she would lose a lot of money and she also objects to a day off each week because that accumulates to four days off a month.

*The new reforms are in response to the brutal murder of a Filipina maid whose body was found stuffed in a freezer last year.

The video has sparked a MAJOR debate

While many disagree with the influencer’s ‘inhumane’ views, lots of people have taken to Twitter to commend her opinion.

The debate rages on…

“This is basic human rights, if you agree then you can go and work every day and leave the passport with your boss. Where’s the humanity?”

“Domestic workers should have two days off and only work eight hours…even eight hours is considered over time. She should be considered an employee just like everyone else”

“She gets to take time off, she gets to have breaks, and she gets to have her passport, I don’t see the issue, she’s a human being like you… and even a better one, but her economic conditions are different… so please have respect for everyone”

“How can you enslave people, when they were born free”

But many support Al Qattan – and worry about their rights as sponsors

“And what about my right as her sponsor when she keeps her passport? What guarantees that when she goes out in the weekend, she comes back in the same state? And who guarantees my right when I’m linked to something negative that I didn’t do?”

“In recent years, domestic workers go to restaurants with us, go to the movies etc…we help them in the house, our kids never touch time and we mostly order takeout, so they don’t cook that much. They’re basically spoiled with one day off per month and a day off for their birthdays, and they’re still not happy'”

“One day per week is honestly too much (break) we give her one day off per month and my mum even keeps track during the day”..

At least some people have it right….

“You’re hurting humanity..stay true to humanity with all sects and humanities’

Al Qattan didn’t share the video on her ‘Gram feed

With over 2.3 million followers, her feed looks more commercial than political
