A 24-year-old British man has been sentenced to two years in jail following a discovery that he had cannabis in his system, international media has reported.

The man, who recently moved to Dubai to work as a waiter, reportedly was getting a medical test done by his UAE employer when the cannabis showed in his system.

The UAE counts the presence of illegal substances in the bloodstream under the laws against possession. Anyone found with illicit substances in their system is punishable under federal law no. 14 of 1995.

The man, from Liverpool in the UK, told the Liverpool Echo that he had consumed the prohibited substance in the UK prior to arriving in the UAE

Cannabis is a prohibited substance in the UAE.

Possession of banned substances in the UAE can attract jail time of up to four years.

The law was amended in 2016 to reduce jail times to two years for minor offenses.
