The powerful Cyclone Mekunu hit the coastal town of Salalah, Oman in the evening yesterday and the videos that surfaced on the internet looked downright scary.

It lashed the city with unprecedented strength resulting in destructive winds and floods with 115 MPH wind speed making Mekunu the strongest storm to ever hit the country.

The National Center of Meteorology (NCM), however, has said that the cyclone will not reach the UAE and there won’t be any direct impact of the cyclone on the country.

According to the authorities, Mekunu had been declared a Category 2 storm on Friday, with wind speeds that went up to 167kmph at its centre, but it has already started to weaken.

Weather in the UAE

Citizens can expect rain and thunderstorms especially in the mountains and southern parts on both Saturday and Sunday.

The authorities are closely monitoring the weather conditions and it is likely to be partly cloudy and hazy. The temperature is also expected to fall.

The NCM is urging residents to follow updates, reports and forecasts issued ONLY by the NCM and ignore other rumours surrounding the cyclone and its impact on the UAE.
