Everyone’s Talking About Dave Chapelle’s Gig But NOT Because Of His Set
The nearly sold-out Dave Chapelle gig at the DWTC has everyone talking, and not just because he put on a reportedly brilliant show.
First, guests were strictly denied access to their phones during the show, and then a heckler made nearly as much noise as Chapelle, according to some reports.
Phones can be distracting, people using phones can be even more distracting, and most importantly, people sharing the content of a performer ruins it for future attendees. So the organisers decision to ban phones isn’t an uncommon one – but the strict approach taken was a first for many concert goers in the UAE.
Phones and cameras were placed in Youndr pouches, magnetic pouches guests can keep hold of but means you can only access your phone in certain areas of the venue
Hardcore mobile phone rules for the @DaveChappelle gig tonight. I like it! I also think I need to get me one of these Yondr pouches! P.S their website has my surname in it… so much to celebrate! https://t.co/GgWzFFT7wW ????????♀️???????? pic.twitter.com/bAMnJ6aLMh

Finally, a gig where people actually enjoy the show
At the Dave Chappelle show last night. Really enjoyable, even if it was a bit on the short side (only about an hour on stage it seemed). Genius idea to get everyone to put their phones in a sealed bag so they didn’t spend half the show on Instagram.

Usually Dave Chapelle brings the controversy, last night it was a woman sitting up front who reportedly heckled the comedian during his performance
Brilliant show, but a heckler made it memorable
Haha, the show was brilliant. I meant more about everything else that was going on. Although the sexism heckler was an interesting part

People were disappointed with the length of the performance
#davechapelle that was very short, 40min? Took me more time to get to the venue… disappointed ????

There’s a mixed bag of reviews on Twitter – with the majority loving the show overall
“Keeping it funny, but very real’
@DaveChappelle Awesome show tonight in DUBAI. My husband and I loved seeing you. Come back soon. As always keeping it funny but very real.

And not so much…
Dave Chapelle show last night was a major disappointment ! His opening act was the star of the show tbh. I could’ve easily left in the middle of Dave’s set and wouldn’t have minded. Very weak set! #Dubai #Comedians
