UAE authorities have confirmed a Swedish national was deported after attempting to enter the UAE on an expired passport.

Ellie Holman was flying from London to Dubai on an Emirates flight with her four-year-old daughter.

Dubai’s Attorney General released a statement amid an international media frenzy regarding the case.

Her passport was expired, she was advised to obtain a temporary visa (and incur fines) which she angrily refused

The woman attempted to enter the UAE with an expired passport

On arrival in Dubai, the woman showed her passport which had expired on June 10, 2018. An immigration officer advised she could not enter the country with this passport.

She then showed an Iranian passport.

Immigration told the woman she could enter on a temporary visa, which would allow her a 96-hour stay, meaning she would need to change her departure date.

The woman angrily refused

The 44-year-old mother needed to pay additional fees, which she angrily refused, according to the report. She verbally insulted the immigration officer and proceeded to document the incident by taking photos with her phone.

Ms Holman was issued with a legal claim ‘with charges of profanity and photographing a government official at the border crossing, a restricted area’.

She was held with her daughter in airport security for 24 hours. The legal case has been dropped and Ms Holman was deported to the UK.

Full consideration was taken for Ms Holman’s daughter

“A legal claim was issued against Ms. Holman with charges of profanity and photographing a government official at the border crossing, a restricted area. The woman and her child remained together in the airport security office for less than 24 hours while services were provided to them, taking into full account and consideration of her 4-year-old daughter. Her father received her immediately upon his arrival and they subsequently departed the country. The prosecution decided to drop the charges against Ellie Holman and to deport her instead.”

His Excellency Esam Issa Al Humaidan, Attorney General of Dubai
