Two siblings – a brother and sister who lost their parents in the 2016 flydubai plane crash – FZ981 – have been awarded AED800,000 in compensatory damages by Dubai Courts.

The Russian nationals lost both their parents in the 2016 crash, that claimed the lives of 62 people in Rostov-on-Don in Russia.

The two opened a civil lawsuit against flydubai, and the courts ordered the AED800,000 be paid to the two, with a 9% legal interest.

flydubai issued a statement on the matter

“flydubai would like to thank the court for today’s judgment which it is currently considering. flydubai remains committed to settling claims for compensation in accordance with applicable laws.”

The airline reiterated its care for family members of those on the plane

“flydubai would like to express our condolences to the family and recognise this is a poignant time for them. Our long-term care team continues to remain available for as long as required.”

According to Gulf News, the two were originally seeking AED36 million in compensation for their father’s death – and expected similar for the mother.

The ruling is subject to appeals for 30 days – both parties are expected to appeal the ruling.
