The former editor-at-large of Gulf News was temporarily ‘insane’ and not aware of his actions when he killed his wife, according to a forensic expert at the Appeals court.

Francis Matthew was accused of the premeditated murder of his 62-year-old wife Jane at their Jumeirah villa in July 2017.

Matthew was handed a 10-year prison sentence in March followed by deportation and now at an appeal hearing, a forensic expert has deemed that he was insane at the time of the murder, according to local reports.

The forensic expert spoke at the Appeals court

Forensic expert, Dr Mona Al Jouhary stated that at the time of the murder Matthew ‘could not be held responsible for his actions, for his mind and perception had been severely clouded due to enormous financial and emotional stress.’

Al Jouhary revealed he struck once with the hammer, not twice and there was no prior intention to kill. The couple were under immense financial pressure according to the defence.

The former journalist is serving a sentence for ‘physical assault leading to death’, however his defence is pushing for a lesser sentence.

The trial continues on September 23.
