8 Tweets From Dubai That Sum Up What A Joke Today’s Lebanese Presidential Elections Were

Today was supposed to be a big say in Lebanese politics. For the first time in two year’s, there was finally going to be a new president. In Lebanon, the parliament elects the president, all 127 members of them. However, today, after the first round of voting didn’t provide a majority, they went again. In round two, after adding up all the votes they had 128 votes. So they did it again. Three times in total. These elected parliament members, who have been taking a lot of flak lately for the You Stink campaign amongst other things, were messing this up too.

The country’s complex power-sharing system stipulates that the president should always be a Maronite, Lebanon’s largest Christian denomination. The prime minister is a Sunni Muslim and the speaker of parliament a Shia Muslim. Now, the newly elected president is going to appoint a Prime Minister. Same as before.

What was supposed to be a good day for Lebanese politics, was another missed opportunity. Oh and in case you didn’t think it was funny enough, the newly elected President, Michel Aoun, the man responsible for giving Lebanon a fresh start, is 82 years old.

One member of parliment posted joke photos to his Twitter throughout voting, making a mockery of it all
