Taxi Drivers To Get A Wake Up Call With New On-Board Monitoring Systems

Taxi drivers who fall asleep at the wheel will get a wake up call with a new system being implemented by the Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC).

CEO of DTC, Dr. Yousef Al Ali announced the move in a statement outlining the improvement in the rate of traffic accidents taxi cars were involved in – dropping down to 0.23 accidents per 100,000km from 0.61 per 100,000km in 2009.

“The DTC is intending to launch a driver monitoring system via on board cameras to spot events of declining attentiveness or sudden sleeping of taxi drivers to avoid potential accidents.”

Dubai taxis covered 94 million km in 2016, and the DTC is keen to drop accident rates lower with the help of technologies.

“It has introduced the Brake Plus system in DTC taxicabs where a four-way flasher system automatically operates once the driver applies the brake to slow down or suddenly stop, in order to minimize the chances of rear side collisions.”

Taxis also have a speed-cap of 120kmph, to reduce speeding and the DTC is analysing problem areas around Dubai to analyse the causes of accidents to introduce remedial measures.
