Avatar

You must have seen today’s Google Doodle featuring a very smiling, kind-looking beautiful face. But did you know who she is?

The public named her as Shahroura, after a singing bird but she was most well known for her adopted name Sabah. She wooed the audiences in the Arab world with her delightful singing for over six decades.

She was the most popular face of entertainment during 1940s and 50s of the Egyptian Cinema

The doodle is commemorating the singer’s 90th birthday in around 24 countries!

But who exactly is this diva?

She was born as Jeanette Gergis al-Feghali in a tiny Lebanese mountain village in 1927. She later changed her name to Sabah, which means morning, and shot to fame with her melodious voice after she came to Cairo in 1940 in search of a brighter future.

For over six decades, Sabah performed in over 100 films and plays and sang over 3000 songs, earning her the nickname ‘Shahroura’, after a singing bird. She was also the first Arabic singer to perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House.

She was known for her wicked sense of humour and the spirit with which she lived her life. It was speculated that she was married 10 times.

Sabah died in 2014 at the age of 87
