OPINION: Event Organisers Should Learn From The Dubai Rugby Sevens

Avatar

The Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens happened this weekend and thousands of people made their way out to the Sevens Stadium to watch the games and have an all-round great weekend.

The event spanned over three days, with more than 100,000 people attending the events, including loads of rugby teams, residents, celebs and staff, making their way out to the stadium.

Which, as many UAE events do, could sound like a logistical nightmare… But it wasn’t.

Several UAE events have copped flack for their poor organisation, difficult accessibility, not enough toilets, late start times and more

But the Rugby Sevens really showed everyone just how effectively run a huge UAE event can be.

There was little gridlock in traffic, it was easy to get to, signage was relatively clear and the whole weekend was run in a punctual manner.

Basic amenities were easily available

Thanks to series sponsor HSBC, there were plenty of ATMs all around the stadium for everyone to use.

There were plenty of clean toilets that had no queues (a rare sight for a ladies’ toilet at an event).

There was plenty of seating for everyone, with staff quick to clean up trash in the grandstands and around the stadium.

There were plenty of free bus services to help reduce the burden on taxis.

And though the taxi lines were long at the end of the games, the RTA taxis were queued up ready for service.

Programmes were available at the door and every game started on time

The Rugby Sevens shows that large scale sporting events, and really any large-scale event can be run efficiently, enabling every attendee to have a great time.

It showed the best side of Dubai, the fun, easygoing lifestyle with excellent weather, great food, good (and cheesy) music and quality people.

It was an all-round winning weekend and it showed with everyone having a smile on their face

Bring on next year!
