Residents of Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa City A were given a fright this week, when a lion cub was spotted roaming the streets of the neighbourhood.

One alarmed resident posted photos of the cub on Facebook, writing: “Please keep a look-out. Spotted in Khalifa City A near the pink shops. Contact Abu Dhabi Wildlife Centre immediately.”

Police were called and arrived to resolve the matter.

It’s believed the lion escaped from a villa in the area, which was being kept as a pet – which is banned under UAE law.

One resident snapped the cub venturing out on the street

The laws against exotic pets

At the beginning of 2017, the UAE government passed a bill banning the unlicenced possession of exotic animals, which can mean imprisonment and attract fines of up to AED500,000.

The UAE authorities have urged residents to report any cases of exotic animals being kept as pets.
