One of the many efforts the UAE has actively taken on is to encourage the use of environmentally-friendly electric vehicles.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced in October 2018, the completion of the second phase of its EV Green Charger initiative, which included the installation of an additional 100 EV Green Charger stations for charging electric vehicles across Dubai, which brings the total number of charging stations in Dubai to 200 EV Green Charger stations.

The benefits of using these mean reducing carbon emissions, and motivating people to consider more sustainable modes of transportation in the city.

There are now 200 EV Green Charger stations across Dubai

Dubai aims to encourage people to opt for more sustainable modes of transportation, and one of the ways this is being implemented is by providing electric vehicles infrastructure across the city.

The EV Green Charger initiative was launched in support of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision to diversify energy sources and promote green transportation in the city. At the time of the launch of the initiative, there were a very limited number of electrical vehicles in Dubai mainly because there was no EV charging infrastructure available. Hence DEWA, as the electricity provider for Dubai, took the lead in setting up the first EV charging infrastructure in the UAE to encourage the public to switch over from petrol to electric vehicles.

This is an excellent example, set-up by DEWA, where the charging stations are spread across petrol stations, malls, offices, clinics, hospitals, residential areas and establishments.

The net CO2 emissions of the Emirate of Dubai have achieved an astounding 19% reduction when compared to the business as usual (BAU) scenario and 10% below the Carbon abatement strategy 2021 target to reduce the carbon emissions by 16%  by 2021., according to the CEO of DEWA, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer.
