Performance is where the Edge ST wins. The first thing the Ford Performance team did was upgrade the engine to a twin-turbo V6 with 335 horsepower – and an eight-speed gearbox that feeds that power to all four wheels.

The ST is really designed to dominate the road, highway and track. All-wheel-drive is handy off-road, but in the ST’s case it’s been used to give the car much more grip on the road when you really need it. And it really shows: the car grips and grips, making every motorway slip-road and exit pure ecstasy.

The ST is all about the drive

Poke the starter button, twist the drive dial, punch the S button and the Edge ST comes alive. The instrument cluster flashes up with a huge rev counter, and the engine noise gets angrier. The sports seats really look after you in the high-speed corners – but are also equally as comfortable on longer journeys when you need the extra comfort.

For all its performance, the Edge ST hides its racing stripes behind a few subtle exterior hints. Cover up the ST badges and you really need to know where to look to spot the differences. The only other exterior clues are the twin-exhaust pipes at the back, the enormous 21-inch wheels and sports tyres, deep side-skirts and a modified front grille.
