As the date for the full introduction of VAT in the UAE looms, the cloud of mystery surrounding what will be taxed and what won’t is beginning to clear.

An official announcement from the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) via ARN has stated which sectors will be exempt from VAT, so residents can rest easy knowing healthcare and education will not be subject to additional charges in the new year.

The following sectors will not be affected

Education, healthcare, oil and gas, transport and real estate will not be affected while the report revealed related equipment such as school supplies and electronics will be taxed.

Full prices must be clearly labelled in store

Another official update has stated the full price must be clearly labelled on the shelf (unlike in the States where tax is added at time of purchase).

Failure to abide by this law will result in fines of up to AED15,000 according to reports.
