If you’ve ever lost something and never got it back, chances are it was probably auctioned off.

As per UAE law, any lost item will only be kept for a certain amount of time to be claimed by the owner after which it is auctioned off.

Dubai Police has several warehouses to house these unclaimed lost items and since 2017 almost 6,575 items were recovered and never claimed.

And it was announced yesterday that the total amount of money from the auctioned lost items had reached AED7,658,482, Khaleej Times reported

By UAE law

Under law number five of 2015 in the UAE, those who “find lost items or money must hand it over to the police within 48 hours to avoid penalty.”

And to those who actually hand in the lost item will be given an appreciation certificate and at times a financial reward worth 10% of the lost item’s net worth – given that it doesn’t go over AED50,000.

The finder can also claim the item if the owner does not claim it in a year’s time.

The police may also sell the found item and the money generated from the auction will be put into the Dubai government’s treasury.
